Amman

1. Amman was known as Philadelphia during Greek and Roman times.  Above is a picture of downtown Amman in April 1997, including the Roman amphitheatre in the center of the photo.

2. Some young shepherds and their flock.  You'll note this was taken from the same spot as the photo above, but looks down the hill.

3. A huge mosque in downtown Amman.

Acropolis at Amman

4 5 6 7

4-7:  From Encyclopedia Britannica:  "The 'royal city' taken by King David's general Joab (II Samuel 12:26) was probably the acropolis atop the plateau (in Amman). King David sent Uriah the Hittite to his death in battle before the walls of the city so that he might marry his wife Bathsheba (II Samuel 11); the incident is also a part of Muslim folklore.  Fortified settlements have existed there from remote antiquity; the earliest remains are of the Chalcolithic period (c. 4000-c. 3000 BC). Later, the city became capital of the Ammonites, a Semitic people frequently mentioned in the Bible; the biblical and modern names both trace back to 'Ammon.'"

8. The entrance to Petra starts with a long walk down a narrow canyon.

9. Looks like there might be something at the end....

10. The Treasury at Petra, carved from the side of the cliff.
