2002: Another Year in Bosnia
November 2001
Sarajevo
November wasn't yet 2002, but winter started early -- these pictures were taken on November 13. Picture 1 was taken over Sarajevo, while pictures 2-6 were taken near our (freezing cold) house (which you can see in Picture 2).
Srebrenica
A work visit to Srebrenica Municipality. Picture 7: waiting for my ride early in the AM-- you can tell it's cold. Picture 8: put that 4WD to use! Pictures 9-10: some of the citizens -- we were visiting to see if they needed housing assistance. The woman on the right in #10 was 100 years old -- she'd seen three major wars! Of course she was ranting and we couldn't really understand her. Pictures 11-14: more pictures from around Srebrenica -- it's mountainous slow going, especially in winter. Note the brilliant little windmill in #14 -- on good days, it'll power a light bulb or a TV, but not both! The rest of the time, these people are in the dark.
January
Another winter of being cold in the house. In picture 15, Julie hasn't quite successfully mastered walking in the snow (despite growing up in Connecticut) -- the aftermath of wiping out while taking out the trash. (See here for more pictures of winter misery in 2001.) Pictures 16 and 17 are from the Jahorina ski resort.
Pictures 18-20: Julie continues to learn how to ski at Jahorina. She seems to have it down in #20.
April
Pictures 21-23: Another visit to the old sniper positions above Sarajevo. (A picture from a previous visit is here -- picture #5 of Dobrinja.)
June
Pictures 24-29: Pictures from one of Dave's work visits to towns near Kupres. Picture #24 is of a very typical hay stack (actually on the road between Novi Travnik and Bugojno, on the way to Kupres). Picture 25 is of the only Serb Orthodox church left standing in the region after the '92-'95 war. Picture 30 is of a destroyed electrical pole, taken from inside a smashed house in the village of Rore, near Glamoc (if that means anything to anyone besides the people who lived there). Picture 31 is a still life of a typical rest stop -- mineral water, espresso, and juice (total cost -- about $2.00).
July
Pictures 32-35: After two years of living in a hovel, we finally decided we'd had enough and moved out (but not before the landlady tried to squeeze every last penny out of us). These pictures above are of our new, much more reasonable accommodations. (By the way, #35 is a view from the house, not of the house.)
October
An evening walk on some of Sarajevo's nicer streets in October 2002.
